Direct Evidence for Auroral Kilometric Radiation Propagation Into Radiation Belts Based on Arase Spacecraft and Van Allen Probe B

نویسندگان

چکیده

Recent studies have shown that auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) can propagate from the polar source cavity into equatorial belt but there is no direct evidence yet. By examining 19-month data Arase satellite and Van Allen Probes, we report a unique event distinct AKR emissions are observed simultaneously at high low latitudes, with peak wave spectra in frequency 300–400 kHz. Using three-dimensional ray tracing method, simulate paths three typical frequencies (220, 350, 550 kHz), show more for 350 kHz downward through locations of Probe B than those other two frequencies. This result successfully explain observation provides to latitude under suitable conditions.

A Multi-Spacecraft Approach to Studying Auroral Kilometric Radiation Using the Virtual Wave Observatory

According to the analysis of the radio wave spectrograms captured by the IMAGE, Geotail, Polar, Wind, Stereo-A, and Stereo-B spacecraft, the correlation between the auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) intensity and the auroral electrojet (AE) index have been found to be negatively correlated as well as positively correlated. These findings raised questions against the present notion that AKR int...

3D PiC code investigations of Auroral Kilometric Radiation mechanisms

Efficient (~1%) electron cyclotron radio emissions are known to originate in the X mode from regions of locally depleted plasma in the Earths polar magnetosphere. These emissions are commonly referred to as the Auroral Kilometric Radiation (AKR). AKR occurs naturally in these polar regions where electrons are accelerated by electric fields into the increasing planetary magnetic dipole. Here con...

The Ring Current, Geomagnetic Disturbance, and the Van Allen Radiation Belts

The large decrease in the horizontal component of the earth's field during the main phase of magnetic storms has been ascribed to the formation or enhancement of a geomagnetic ring current. In this paper we discuss the motions of particles trapped in the earth's dipole field and the resulting ring current. These calculations deal only with a steady state, though during storms the state is chang...

Generation of Auroral Kilometric Radiation in Bounded Source Regions

Owing to the complete and precise wave/particle measurements performed by the Viking and FAST spacecraft in the sources of the terrestrial Auroral Kilometric Radiation, the conditions of generation of this coherent radio emission are now well documented. It has been demonstrated that the production of radio waves occurs in thin laminar regions that exactly correspond to the regions of auroral p...

A simple model of the Auroral Kilometric Radiation visibility

Data collected with Polrad swept frequency analyzer during almost 2.5 years of Interball-2 mission are used to investigate the directivity properties of AKR observed in the Northern Hemisphere. In contrast with the previous, mostly statistical studies, single dynamic spectra have been analyzed. Simple modeling of AKR source visibility from the location of the observer makes possible to find app...
